Sumo Wrestling

Long overdue in my regular visits to Tokyo was watching a live sumo contest. During the year sumo wrestlers compete in a series of Basho lasting around 2 weeks. All the major wrestlers compete in one fight each day and at the end the one with the most wins and least losses wins the Basho. These tournaments are held in Tokyo a few times a year but also in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu. I went to Kokugikan the Sumo stadium where all Tokyo events are held. It was a very exciting time as for the first time after 6 months Yokozuna ( Grand Champion ) Asashoryu was back from his 6 months ban full of controversy. Also for the first time he was competing with the other only recently promoted Yokozuna Hakkuhou. All in all it was a fantastic experience that made me even more interested in this old sport that is so much a part of Japanese traditions. More pictures of the event here
